Don’t miss our leisurely barge escape to charming Alsace-Lorraine, meeting place of Europe’s Latin & Germanic cultures. Nestled between the Vosges Mountains & the
River Rhine, this lovely Franco-German border region is a colorful land of storks’ nests & quaint architecture. With gentle forested mountains & peaceful canals we enjoy
scenes dotted with picture-postcard villages. Treat yourself to some of France’s top beer & pinot noir wine. Regional cuisine is scrumptious tarte flambée, quiche lorraine,
sauerkraut, cheeses, foie gras, & fish, not to be missed. Some of us may spring for fishing licenses & try our hand at catching our dinner in pristine canal waters!
Our flexible barge route lets us moor at ports at will & stop to explore the charming countryside on foot or cycle along centuries-old tow paths. We pass through 50
impressive locks on our relaxing journey. It’s almost impossible to get lost! Eat breakfast on our barge each morning & later enjoy our tasty picnic lunches. For dinner, we
plan a combo of local restaurant & healthful on-board meals, creatively prepared with supplies funded from our food kitty. (Our drinks are extra.)
After our arrival in Frankfurt, we ride the rails to Strasbourg, culturally rich seat of the Council of Europe & France’s 7th largest city. Then we catch a 40-minute train to our
colorful home port Lutzelbourg, a medieval castle town at the scenic junction of 5 valleys. Plying the canals along the Marne & Sarre, our penichette meanders past castles,
hop fields, windmills, green valleys, & sleepy towns filled with charming half-timbered houses. Later our floating hotel heads to the province of Lorraine, passing through
15 locks before we make our way to more hamlet gems. Try the famous bread in tranquil Gondrexange & discover serenely beautiful Nancy, a Lorraine city built around a
fortified castle on a rock above the Meurthe River. A canal a few blocks east of the historic center connects the Marne to the Rhine. Return to Lutzelbourg before our train ride
to Paris for our afternoon “Right Bank Monuments” walking tour. Enjoy an evening in the bustling French capital before the flight home or extend your stay in Europe.
