Itinerary:
Days 1 + 2 U.S.A. New Zealand Your trans-pacific flights depart from Los Angeles of San Francisco to Queenstown, crossing the International Date Line.
Day 3 Queenstown Welcome to New Zealand! From the airport, head to our hotel & rest up from the long journey. Then youre free to explore the outdoor adventure capital of the world. Voted the worlds friendliest international city in a Conde Nast Traveler poll, Queenstown offers beautiful mountain & lake scenery, excellent wine, & a glimpse at Maori culture. Bungy jumping, anyone? This is the place it was invented!
Day 4 Queenstown More time today to take in a few of charming Queenstowns diverse attractions before meeting guide for lunch at noon & then the bike fitting. After an introductory ride to idyllic Arrowtown, an 1800s gold mining settlement, enjoy a delicious orientation dinner with fellow cyclists L/D) 20 miles
Day 5 Queenstown Te Anau This morning leave Queenstown to head through peaceful hamlets on the old steam locomotive route. Cycling along Lake Wakatipu via Kingston on the level road to Te Anau, see the lovely Kepler Mountains in the distance. Relax over dinner in Te Anau, a lakeside settlement called the walking capital of the world. Home base for 2 nights, Te Anau is in the Fiordland National Park area, a World Heritage site. Day 6 Te Anau Milford Sound Te Anau Rest your cycling legs a bit today as you take in glorious countryside while driving along one of the most splendid roads on earth, the route to world-famous Milford Sound. There are many superb views on the way. The optional 2 ½ hour roundtrip hike to Key Summit is a highlight. At the Homer Tunnel, the road descends sharply to the sea. Later relax on a boat trip on the stunning fjord before the van shuttles our group over the Divide back to Te Anau. (B/L)
Day 7 Te Anau -- Otautau Biking south near the beautiful shoreline of Lake Manapouri, take the scenic southern route along the edge of Fiordland National Park. This enchanting Southland region is the gateway to New Zealands sheep & farmland country. Tonight welcoming Kiwi farm family hosts await your arrival. **Maximum of 4 Bike New Zealand cyclists per farm family; shared bathrooms. (B/L/D) 54 miles
Day 8 Otautau Invercargill Cycle today past pretty coastal villages through Riverton, established as a whaling station in 1837. Continue on to Invercargill, New Zealands southernmost city. Bordered by marine reserves & conservation land, the historical flax-milling settlement prides itself on its late 19th century buildings & its excellent shopping. (B/D) 39 miles
Day 9 Invercargill Papatowai A ride through quiet countryside leads past fertile farmlands, remote beaches, waterfalls, & peaceful old villages with splendid coastal scenery. Cycle along Curio Bay, home to the 160 million year old petrified forest & a yellow-eyed penguin colony. Then pedal through the Catlins region, known for its dense rain forest & rare birds. Spend the night in Papatowai, a fishing community overlooking Tautuku Bay & a magnificent peninsula. (B/D) 51 miles
Day 10 Papatowai -- Dunedin After breakfast, bike to Balclutha, a small farming community called The Big River Town. From there, ride the van into Dunedin, an ecotourism center located high on the Otago Peninsula. Scottish heritage town Dunedin, home to 1873 Larnach Castle, has the world's only mainland albatross colony, the steepest street in the world, & a thriving Cadbury chocolate factory. A farewell dinner caps your final day of cycling through the best of the South Island. (B/L/D) 20 miles
Days 11 + 12 Dunedin Christchurch Bid farewell to Dunedin & then board the van for the picturesque ride to Christchurch, New Zealands Garden City considered the most English city outside of England. Take advantage of 2 days at leisure to see Christchurchs many sights, including the International Antarctic Centre, the historic cathedrals, & the romantic parks. (B)
Day 13 Christchurch U.S.A. Today its homeward bound with New Zealand memories of a lifetime. Fly via Auckland to Los Angeles & back to your U.S. gateway city.
